Kung fu masters need to be agile, flexible and alert. This need is reflected in the choice of the uniforms. A kung fu uniform is designed to help swift movements. The cloth does not come in between moving hands or legs. The uniform provides maximum comfort to the wearer. The uniforms are available for adults as well as for children.

Since kung fu also reflects a philosophy of life, the kung fu uniforms are simple in nature. They are not very stylized or fashionable, but are made for real use.

A basic kung fu uniform consists of trousers and top or jacket. The trousers are loose-fitting. Pants come with an elastic waist with drawstring, a gusseted crotch and an elastic ribbed ankle. Pants are made of cotton, polyester or silk.

A kung fu uniform top has rollback cuffs, a mandarin collar and side vents. They are generally adorned with frog buttons or knots. There are mostly three color options: black with red, black with white or completely black. The tops are also made of cotton, polyester or silk. A kung fu jacket comes with white frog buttons, white collar, and white cuffs. Middleweight polyester/cotton fabric keeps this jacket looking sharp. The soft, silky, shiny sashes will complement any kung fu uniform. It generally measures 4"" x 120"". The cost of the entire kung fu uniform is up to $100.

There are many online companies that sell kung fu uniforms. The shipping charges are generally waived if the purchase is more than $100.

Bikini Brief

Four Winds Aikido 合気道Topeka ,Kansas Aug 28, 2009 ( Please rate & Comment)

Four Winds Aikido 合気道Topeka ,Kansas Aug 28, 2009 ( Please rate & Comment) 1.Keep one point 2.Relax Completely 3.Keep Weight underside 4.Extend Ki

guitar amp stands tomato planter Moroccanoil

Credibility of Distance Learning in the Martial Arts

Something in the martial arts that is argued back and forth all the time is the effectiveness of distance learning versus traditional training in a dojo and can one learn the martial arts to any degree of proficiency through distance learning. In an age where communicating and learning via the Internet are staples of every day life and the ability to learn anything efficiently is open to everyone because of this, my answer is a resounding "YES!".

Consider this...one of the recent arguments I have encountered is that to earn a Dan ranking takes years and years of blood, sweat and tears and that only after you have spilled blood on the dojo floor can you be considered credible to wear the Dan you are awarded by XYZ Organization, School, Federation, etc. and only through this method can you become a better practitioner. While I agree with the idea in general, the argument against distance learning is that there is no way you can advance rank as a Black Belt, or as a Colored Belt for that matter, unless you train in a school under age old traditional methods. There is no way you can possibly learn any system of self-defense through "home study" methods.

OK..well...let's say that a person has put 15-20 years into his/her training and they now wear the rank of 4th or 5th Dan. This person has trained and completed all of the requirements to advance his/her rank. I guess some could say that because of the rank and the years put into the training that he/she is deserving of praise and respect, being of great honor and integrity because of the advancements and the time spent training in the arts. This person obviously has learned what it means to be a better practitioner and is now credible in the eyes of his/her peers. Seems like a solid point.

Now, on the flip side of that coin, let's say that this same person on the outside looks and acts like the rank they wear and talks the talk of a true Black Belt but underneath has a drinking problem or a drug problem or, worse yet, both. They treat people with disrespect behind their backs and are full of ego. Every time something goes wrong in his/her life all they want to do is go out, get high and pick a fight. Just so you know, I am not speaking hypothetically. I trained under just such a person. Does this mean he/she deserves to wear the rank of an advanced Dan just because they have put their time in at a traditional school and passed the curriculum? Does this make him/her better than me or anyone else who wants to open up their learning to a credible, comprehensive distance learning program taught by advanced, committed, honorable individuals? I think not as we all know that the martial arts are about so much more than just the belt one wears.

The traditional thinking is if you choose to train like this that it is lacking in so many respects, ie: training quality, lack of training partners, too easy to slack off and not train, no one is there to insure you are actually performing the material, and on and on, that there is no way this can work and once you receive your rank, it is just a "piece of paper" from a "diploma mill" or in the case of a Dan ranking, a paper "Black Belt Mill". Well, let me pose this question to you, what takes more effort, dedication, perseverance, integrity and personal commitment, walking into a local school and having someone tell you what to do or to take a course and break it down yourself, put together a training schedule based around your school or work schedule, provide yourself with a place to train and then effectively complete the training per belt rank? I realize this question is rhetorical but the point I am trying to make is that BOTH methods of study, in class and home study, are just as effective in learning any type of material and that as martial artists, to be so closed minded about knowledge via sources "outside the box", especially in this day and age of advanced technology, is a true detriment to the advancement of the arts as a whole.

The traditionalists fail to recognize the doors this can and will, most assuredly, open up to students around the world just as it has with all areas of education. Right now...today...you can earn the highest level of certified, recognized, accredited university degrees online from the most reputable Colleges and Universities - WORLD WIDE! This is an absolute, indisputable fact that even the most dyed-in-the-wool traditionalist cannot refute. In my mind, it isn't so much how you learn what you learn but how you apply that knowledge after you have learned it. I have always said that certifications and degrees are just pieces of paper but what ultimately makes them so valuable is the application of that knowledge and how it is presented to others down the line. We should always be moving forward with our knowledge, always be willing to embrace new ideas and concepts. If we stop learning, we stop growing.

As the sport is constantly evolving, so too must its practitioners evolve. No longer can we just accept the traditional training orthodoxy as the rule. Just the simple fact that hand-to-hand combatives have become so much more advanced in just the last 10 years would dictate that we as practitioners of the arts should be more open-minded and willing to advance our learning from as many sources outside of our own backyards as possible. Distance learning offers just such a solution by eliminating the geographical boundaries that currently exist in limiting students to train and learn in just one setting, in one style, and from one instructor. With the Internet, video conferencing, online tutorials, forums, blogs, etc. literally at our fingertips, the possibilities are endless. No longer will students have to be relegated to choices for learning that only include the local dojo. Imagine being able to train with and share information and ideas about advancing the arts with students from all around the world in real time!

Of course, to that extent, the traditionalist would argue that there would be a problem with time differences as well as differences in training disciplines and that there is no way this would work. Always an excuse. I have heard this argument for years but that is because they fail to see the potential that exists in people to come up with long term solutions to these problems, solutions that are offered by just such a group of dedicated individuals in the AKPKF...American Kick-Punch Karate Federation, headed by Sensei Danny Hill. This is an organization that leads by example and is all about keeping the integrity of the arts intact while attaching 21st Century thinking to an age old problem of bringing the training and discipline to students around the world who otherwise would not have access to the information and they do it for FREE!

Now, I understand that traditionalists want to keep the training in the dojo's...OK...but what about the aspiring student who wants to become involved in the martial arts but has nowhere to train, or who lives in a remote area where it is 50-100 miles to the nearest dojo? What about the people around the globe who live in villages where there is no training for thousands of miles around? How then does the traditionalist solve that geographical problem? They solve it by continuing to argue for classroom training as the only beneficial means of learning self-defense. In my opinion, what that argument really boils down to is money.

Think about it. They insist that receiving your certification via distance learning is not credible yet they take "Little Johnny's" tuition every month, usually an exorbitant amount, and pass the student through the system whether he/she has learned the material or not. Again, I am not speaking hypothetically here. I have seen this first hand even at the Black Belt level. This problem exists on a wide scale and is becoming worse every day. The traditionalists say that distance learning has become a blight on our beloved art form and that it is denigrating everything that is sacred about our beloved sport, even to the point of "bastardizing" what the arts stand for, while all along doing the same thing by charging outrageous monthly fees and providing training that is mediocre at best. To me, this action is deplorable and not even remotely deserving of respect and honor, yet this practice continues to grow day by day with new "McDojo's" springing up on just about every street corner. The traditionalist view has become about "selling the product" and not about "teaching the art". Anything that does not "jibe" with their way of thinking is garbage and only their style and only the way it is taught by them, is the "be all to end all" and the only path towards martial arts excellence. In my opinion, there is nothing credible about this practice or this way of thinking and it is only hurting the arts, not enhancing them.

In closing, let me state that I have had great personal success training in both mediums. Each method has its place in education and each, in my opinion, is equally effective. I believe that both methods can co-exist peacefully. I personally have continued to expand my knowledge of self-defense through many different methods of learning such as books, tapes, cd's, dvd's, online tutorials, and traditional training on the mats with practitioners who are also open-minded enough to see the positive impact that distance learning can have on all of us if we would just embrace the need for this type of studying. I have my own dojo and am about to begin my training in Renzoku Jiu-Jitsu, a program that is taught by Soke John Cozatt who happens to live on the East Coast (I live on the West Coast) and yes, it is a distance learning program, one that I can advance to 5th Dan in and since that is the highest level of achievement in that system, that is my goal. In lieu of this program, in order for me to train in a "credible" traditional jiu-jitsu class setting, I would have to drive 100 miles round trip 3 nights a week at great expense to accomplish what I can do in my own dojo via distance learning. Whether or not I make it to 5th Dan will strictly be up to me but that really isn't the issue. The point is that the opportunity exists for all of us to utilize modern day technology to continue to move forward with our training and help advance this sport through the 21st Century. We have to continue to be open to new training methods and learning techniques so that the martial arts can continue to grow and survive. I for one will do all I can to be at the forefront of that movement.

airplane weathervanes Belgian Chocolate EAR Warmer

Self Defense Benefits of Boxing

Today we discuss the Self-Defense benefits from enrolling in a boxing class. If you are learning self-defense and are considering taking a boxing course to supplement what you've been learning, this article will be of particular interest to you.

First and foremost, find a good teacher! Ask people you know whom they would recommend. Watch a class by each prospective teacher. Do they take the time to work with students having issues, or are you left on your own to repeat bad technique over and over? Do they show equal attention to all the students, or have their favorites they spend more time with? Are there warm-ups before class? Do they make sure you are solid on the basics before showing you more advanced material?

A good boxing coach will show you proper ways to warm up, including stretching. Avoiding injury during your workouts is key. A common complaint is "but I don't have time to warm up while being attacked!" That's correct! But, you are not in a self defense situation now, you are performing demanding physical activities in class. If you are working out, practicing self-defense techniques, or taking a boxing class, then you owe it to yourself to prepare your body for what is coming.

Studying boxing will teach you the importance of your stance and how to move. These are the foundations not only in a self defense situation, but in any fighting style or sport. You can quickly gauge someone's experience as a fighter by observing how they stand and move.

Boxing classes teach how the stance maintains balance. You don't want to be out of balance after a punch or self defense move. Everything in boxing, karate, self defense, or any fighting style happens in split seconds. Being out of balance for even a brief period makes you very vulnerable to your opponent (not to mention embarrassed if you fall during class).

A course in boxing will reinforce what self-defense training preaches: keeping your hands in proper position. Hands must be up at all times (but not in front of your face. Your vision is obscured and you can be whacked in the head by your own hands if someone punches them). You must be ready to block a takedown, grab, punch, or kick.

Have you ever walked by the type of school that has the big glass windows in front? Watch the class for a few moments. If the teacher yells a command, and the students throw a punch, but keep their arms held out at full extension after the strike, waiting for the next command from the teacher, AVOID that school. The way you train determines the way you react in a self defense situation. Things happen very quickly, and you don't have time to analyze what you will do next. If you don't train to bring your hands back to a defensive position immediately, you will leave them out there, and you WILL get hit. Hard. If you need proof, turn on the television and watch a boxing or UFC MMA fight. The fighters quickly bring their hands back to position after every punch to prevent themselves from being hit by a counterstrike from their opponent.

Physical fitness is another major benefit of boxing classes. Your cardiovascular health will increase by leaps and bounds. Your entire body is used during boxing. Legs are moving constantly, abs are twisting as you throw punches, back, shoulders, biceps, and arms are worked non stop. Hitting the bags over 1000 times during an hour long class is not unusual. Using the speedbag for 10 minutes straight will make your traps burn. When class is over, you are dripping in sweat, and it's clear you've had one of the best all around workouts possible.

Finally, sparring will definitely sharpen your self defense moves. Lets face it: anyone can throw punches at a heavy-bag. The bag doesn't move, and it doesn't hit you back! Put the gloves and headgear on, step into the ring, and your whole perception changes. It doesn't matter if you never want to be in a boxing match. I recommend you spar at least a few times with your training buddy or coach. You will understand clearly what it is like to have someone trying to hit you. You will see just how fast things happen, which is why I stress over and over to my self defense students to train the techniques into muscle memory. They must happen automatically, without thinking. Trust me, sparring will quickly make a believer out of you.

How do you transition what you learn from boxing into a self-defense situation? After all, when you are boxing you have big pillows on your hand to protect your face and body with. On the street, you don't. Gosh what a shock!! It seems like it always is. Have doubts about that? Watch the evening news! You can't see a newscast without some story about crime be it a home invasion, assault, robbery, carjacking or murder and more.

While it is true that self defense tools like stun guns, pepper sprays and personal alarms can go a long way in protecting you and your family in most situations I always recommend another step.

Self Defense Training at just about any age can give you a decided edge in an assault situation. Most folks don't have the time to do it with their busy schedules.

There is an alternative! Self defense training DVD's can be done at home, at your own pace, on your schedule, with world class instructors-how cool is that?

It is great women's self defense for crime prevention.

You can repeat the lessons as often as you want, practice alone or with a friend or spouse and learn anything from the basics of self defense moves for women to advanced tactics on how to protect against multiple attackers armed or unarmed-something for everyone!!

I have long preached that basic self defense skills and martial arts should be taught in schools at an early age and repeated for a few years-but that is just my opinion.

Just think about it. Boys and girls trained in the basics at an early age and then reinforced for a few years will provide protection for a lifetime. It will teach boys in the class that at least those girls may not be a pushover on an assault.

I have also found that when done together as a family this type of training is a moral booster, fun, good exercise, and promotes family unity. So get the kids and mom and dad involved-get trained today. It will build your confidence and your ability to defend your self and your family.

motion activated sprinkler EAR Warmer green bean casserole

Self Defense - Which Non Lethal Self Defense Weapon is Best for You?

Okay so you have made a conscious decision to get a non lethal self defense weapon instead of a handgun. Now what?

Non lethal self-defense weapons are gaining in popularity because they are effective against attacks. Martial arts and other self-defense courses are great to learn, but for many people, they take too much time to learn and can be expensive. You are not always going to have the opportunity to use learned self-defense skills. Non lethal self defense weapons such as stun guns, pepper sprays, tasers, etc. are a more practical way to go.

Before you go out and purchase a non lethal self-defense weapon you should consider some of the following points:

o WHICH IS BEST FOR YOU? Study and learn as much as you can. See what weapon is going to be right for you both on a physical and mental level.

oLEARN HOW TO USE IT. Having a self defense weapon and not knowing how to use it can injure you as easily as it can hurt your assailant. Once you have chosen a self-defense product, ask for proper instructions on how to use it, or take a course in using the products properly. Then PRACTICE using it until it becomes second nature.

oIS IT LEGAL IN YOUR AREA?You don't want the embarrassment of being harassed by local law enforcement. Take the time to see if you are allowed to carry the self-defense product you have chosen. Some may need permits or other permission before you can carry them around in public.

oDON'T OVERCARRY - If pepper spray is going to give you the jump you need to defend against an assailant, then there is really no need to carry air guns, slingshots or a taser. When the time comes to use your weapon there cannot be any indecision as to which to use.

Self defense products can get you out of a bad situation - there is no doubt about that. Unless you know what you need, how to use that product, and the legality of it, you may be getting into trouble. You can actually do yourself more harm that good by not doing your homework before you invest time and money into self-defense products. They can save your life, your money and provide you with peace of mind.

Jack Krohn is the #1 author of Home Security Articles in the country according to EzineArticles. He owns SECURITY SOLUTIONS a one stop resource that provides solutions and answers for all your self defense and home security problems.

Chances are very good that you are reading this because in some way crime has touched your life or you want to be proactive and protect yourself, family, home, or business from the ravages of crime. That is the first step.

trailer axles Frederic Fekkai Hair Color guitar amp stands

The Terrible Truth About Self Defense DVDs

All over the internet, there is constant buzz about different self defense systems. Its present in every forum, and every community that you can picture. People ask themselves... Is it really true? Can I learn to be a ball-busting super commando in just three short days? Super mystery special ops guy tells me that I can.

And so every day, countless people fork over upwards to $200 for this piece of this state-of-the-art top secret info. Every day people get these courses in the mail and every day they are convinced that they have what they need. Unfortunately, some of these people find out to-little-to-late that they need more than just a DVD to teach them correct self defense.

There is an ongoing debate about the validity of seminars and fighting instructional DVDs. There are a lot of people out there who would tell you that in three days you can learn how to defend yourself effectively on the street, when that cannot be further from the truth.

Now, dont get me wrong, I am by no means stating the fighting instructional DVDs and seminars are not excellent tools to use when learning self defense. In fact, I believe that they are excellent tools, but they are by no means the whole enchilada. Self Defense DVDs should be used in conjunction instruction from a teacher from a real school. Now, there are several reasons why this is important.

A school can teach you how to effectively use your technique. You have people you can practice with. You can learn what the right or wrong punch feels like. Even more specifically you have an instructor that you can work on a day-to-day basis. A commando tape can not do that for you, and a Seminar can do that only for a few days. It takes time before mastery of any art can be achieved.

So, before you try out your latest technique from your favorite fighting instructional DVD on some jerk on the street, you need to think before you act. People need to understand that there is no magic pill to a difficult thing such as self defense. To learn effective self defense one needs time to learn the reality of what can really happen to them on the streets. They need to know both the pros and the cons of doing the right or wrong thing in a self defense situation.

It is also important to understand that the right self defense dvs and weapons can often be more practical and even more effective when used in conjunction with effective training and advice from professionals. So even a consumer should call and inquire before they decide to pick any self defense product, including a DVD.

Remember, in self defense, knowledge is power. The more you know the better prepared you are in a confrontation, and the greater your chances are of getting out of a violent situation alive.

chocolate martini

Part 1/4 Bird shot to 1 ounce Slug Modification = DIY Home Made Slugs

WARNING! FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY! WARNING! Bird shot to 1 ounce Slug Modification = DIY Home Made Slugs ============================== Here is a vid series, part 1, that shows how to modify a multi-purpose shotgun shell to a 1 oz slug. Why do this? 1. In case you can't purchase manufactured slug shells (emergency) and... 2. To save money - a box of 5 each 1 oz manufactured slugs cost about $5.00, so thats $1.00 per shell. Now by modding a box of multi-purpose shells you save some money. A box of 25 each MP shells cost about $10, so that about .40 cents per shell. If your gonna practice wouldnt it make sense to save some money in the process? Yes it does. Anyway check the vid and remember its for informational purposes only and I am not liable for anything you do. ;) Steve safearmsreview SAR shotgun remington 870 mossberg 12 20 gauge self defense tactical under over pump semi auto saiga boom stick shot shell slug modification

lesbian lick

Self Defense

Our feature film MYSTERY TEAM opens in Los Angeles, CA on 3/12. Has our society made us so afraid of the legal system that it has actually given an edge to the criminal?

Has the honest, hard working, average individual become so timid that such a question would even have to be asked? Yes, we live in a society were prayer has been taken out of our schools. The ideals of honor and patriotism no longer seem to be instilled in our young, and our idea corporal punishment is a "time out" without video games, but has it really come to the point that when a situation arises where our safety is threatened, that our first reaction is to consider the legal implications before we act?

Well, let me say this. If your answer is yes than it is too late and you are already a victim. If you are going to take the time to consider anything at all, you are already a victim. When confronted with an aggressive or possibly aggressive situation that would call for the use of some sort of defense product, you have only a split second to either act or surrender yourself to your higher power and hope for the best. There is an old saying I can still here my grandfather spouting "boy, it's better to be judged by twelve than carried by six". You've got to appreciate the logic of the old timers. What argument is there fore a statement like that?

Now don't get me wrong, I do not promote violence of any kind. I wish with all my heart that we lived in a society that when I am on the side of the road changing a flat tire and a car pulls up behind me, that I did not have to worry whether or not they were there to help me or to rob me. But that is the society we live in and like it or not we must be prepared. That is why my wife and I both carry Pepper Shot pepper spray in our self defense tool box, and my wife even added a C2 Taser just in case. I have told her time and time again, "If you are approached in a threatening manner or if your spidey sense tells you that you are in danger, Do Not Hesitate, use your tools and get away quickly!"

Then, if that individual manages to get her name and address off of the name tag displayed on her back while she is running away and knows where to have the papers served, we'll sort that out when it happens.

is clinton kelly gay

Can Aikido be used for self-defense?

"Those who are skilled in combat do not become angered,
those who are skilled at winning do not become afraid.
Thus the wise win before the fight, while the ignorant fight to win."
Yes, Aikido can be a very effective form of self-defense However, it can take considerable time and effort before Aikido (or any martial art) can be used effectively in a self-defense situation.

What's Muaythai?

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) is what the Thai people call their own martial art. The art of Muay Thai has been the country's most popular spectator sport for hundreds of years.. It is unique among other kinds of fighting disciplines in its approach to close quarters fighting. Fighters are able to more effectively use their elbows, knees, feet and fists than in other martial arts.
The Wai Kru (respects to the teacher) also known as Ram Muay (boxing dance) is an important part of any evening watching Thai Boxing. These are ceremonies that are performed before each Muay Thai bout. Sometimes the Wai Kru are brief and basic, but other times they may be eloquent performances that draw praise and applause from the crowd. It is said that those who see well can determine who will win the fight by watching two fighters perform their Wai Kru. Teachers are highly respected in Thai society, and many artistic disciplines, not just Muay Thai, perform Wai Kru or "respects to the teacher". Foreigners viewing these rituals should take care to be polite and not act disrespectfully regarding the Wai Kru. The Thais take seriously any insult to the Wai Kru, just as you would if somebody insulted your spiritual beliefs.
Before the competition of Muay-Thai ,Krabi-Krabong (Thai swords) , or any other ancient weapons martial arts , every competitor must perform the "Wai-Khru" ritual and perform the boxing dance which is the continued tradition since ancient times."Wai-Khru" is a way to pay respect to his majesty the king or the chairman of the competition tournament. Furthermore , "Wai-Khru" is the way to realize the goodness of the master who gave them the knowledge. It's also the way to create the strength of their mind. The style of the dance is unique to each boxing bureau. Boxers who danced the same style wouldn't box each other since they realize that they have the same master. Furthermore, to dance is one way to warm up before starting the fight . It also helps relax the stress and to prepare body and mind to be ready to get into the battle.

How did Tai Chi begin?

There are two theories
Theory #1
Around the Yuan and Ming Dynasty - Chang Sanfeng - about 600-700 years ago lived in Shaolin Temple and went to WuDang Mountain and created Tai Chi. He saw a crane fighting with a snake. The crane was always hard. The snake would yield and follow the crane and did not resist and so he didn't lose his life to the crane. Hard was controlled by soft.
Theory #2
Created by Chen Family about 300 years ago by Chen Wangting.

What are the 13 Postures (original name of Tai Chi Chuan)?
The 13 Postures are comprised of 8 energies and 5 steps:
8 energies are: ward off, roll back, press, push, pull, elbow strike, shoulder strike, and split
5 steps are: forward, back, look left, gaze right, and center

How many styles of Tai Chi are there and what are their differences?
There are 5 different styles of Tai Chi that are connected with each other. Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu and Sun styles. All 5 styles are connected together; their outside movements are a little different but inside the energies are the same.
Chen Style - is fast and slow combined together with some jumping and stomping movements. Old form and cannon fist was created from the 17th generation.
Yang Style - Yang Luchan
learned the old form/frame from the Chen family. Yang movements are slow, even, gentle, big and large. Yang Luchan learned from the 14th generation Chen family member.
Wu/Hao Style - The 1st Wu style came from Yang and Chen styles and is slow, smooth, and small and the posture is high. Wu Yuxiang learned from Yang Banhou, 2nd generation Yang family member, and then learned from Chen Qingping, 14th generation. Wu/Hao is a smaller frame.
Wu Style - 2nd Wu style comes from Quanyu who learned from Yang Banhou. They lean their body to the side but when they lean they think about being straight. Wu learned from Yang Banhou. Later in age Banhou's frame became smaller.
Sun Style - learned from Hao Weijian. Their movements combine 3 styles of Tai Chi together, Wu, Hsing-I and Bagua.

Who created each of the 5 styles?
Chen was created by Chen WangtingYang was created by Yang LuchanWu/Hao was created by Wu YuxiangWu was created by Wu Jian Quan or Wu QuanyuSun was created by Sun Lutang

What are the original names of the birthplaces for the 5 major styles of Tai Chi Chuan?
The original name of the birthplace of Yang Style is Guangfuzhen town in Guangpingfu area (bigger than county, smaller than province).
The original name of the birthplace of Chen Style is Chenjiagou village, Wen county, Hunan province.
The original name of the birthplace of Wu/Hao Style is Guangfu town, Yongnian county, Heibei province.
The original name of the birthplace for Sun or Wu Styles is not officially known.

What is the History of Yang Style?
The birthplace of Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan is Hebei Province, Yongnian County. About 200 years ago, Yang LuChan went to Beijing to teach the Emperor's Family. People would watch and wanted to learn from him. His movements were smooth, slow and even. As it evolved, Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan has had different frames. The original frame style is called the Old Frame. Then came the Small, Middle or Medium Frame and last the Large Frame. The Frame that is practiced now is the Large Frame which we call the "Traditional, 85, 103, and 108 Form." Even though the counting is different, the movements are the same.

What is the most popular style of Tai Chi today?
Yang Style is the most popular style of Tai Chi practiced around the world today. The reason for this world-wide popularity can be found not only in the powerful and dynamic elements of karate-do, but also in the combination of physical and mental training of this art of self-defense, which requires a healthy body, a sound spirit and a refined character. Further, the people nowadays might be very attracted by the beauty and the thrilling action of the karate movements.

Karate-do is an empty-handed technique, exercised with the power of one's own body and the basic movement can be developed into a superior level, at which the enemy can be controlled by a demonstration of strength like that of using actual weapons. The beauty of the essential techniques are demonstrated in the so-called " kata ", fixed exercises, through which the karateka rhythmically performs body movements, such as bending, jumping and balancing, backward and forward, left and right, up and down smoothly and fiercely, at low and high speed.
In the free sparring games, the offensive and defensive techniques, such as striking and kicking with simultaneous block-attack combinations, are performed with great speed, requiring a keen coordination of the movements of the athlete.

Karate-do might be considered as the most ideal physical exercise, not only because the limbs and the movements of the body are systematically trained, but also because of the required exercise of muscles, which are normally not used.

Karate-do as an art of self defense and a form of physical exercise has recently become a competitive sport. However, the karate contests are conducted under strictly fixed rules, because of the involved physical danger. A good fighting spirit of the karateka, in possession of controlled power and techniques and a fair judgment of the referee, together with the sensitive reaction of the spectators are important to create the true meaning of a karate contest.

Karate may be practiced by the physically weak, by women, children and elderly and all the karateka 's should always emphasize the spiritual of karate-do !!

Ref : The above information has been taken from the J.K.A information guide book.

What is Kodokan Judo?

Judo is many things to different people. It is a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat, and a way of life. It is all of these and more.
Kodokan Judo comes to us from the fighting system of feudal Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu. Dr. Kano, President of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo.
Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 and is practiced by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it.
Judo is Fun!
As in all sports, Judo has a strict set of rules that governs competition and ensures safety. For those who want to test their skills, Judo offers the opportunity for competitionat all skill levels, from club to national tournaments, to the Olympic Games. There are separate weight divisions for men and women, and boys and girls.
Judo is best known for it's spectacular throwing techniques but also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized pins, control holds, arm locks, and Judo choking techniques. Judo emphasizes safety, and full physical activity for top conditioning. Judo is learned on special mats for comfort and safety.
Judo is unique in that all age groups, both sexes, and most disabled persons can participate together in learning and practicing the sport. Judo is an inexpensive, year-round activity, that appeals to people from all walks of life. Many people over sixty years of age enjoy the sport, as well as very young boys and girls.
Judo develops self-discipline and respect for oneself and others. Judo provides the means for learning self-confidence, concentration, and leadership skills, as well as physical coordination, power, and flexibility. As a sport that has evolved from a fighting art, it develops complete body control, fine balance, and fast reflexive action. Above all, it develops a sharp reacting mind well-coordinated with the same kind of body. Judo training gives a person an effective self-defense system if the need arises.
The Judo Rank System
Judo created the system of ranks, now used in most other martial arts, that recognize a person's degree of knowledge, ability, and leadership. There are separate ranks for juniors (under 17) and seniors. Judo ranks are identified by colored belts, and ten degrees of advanced grades for black belts. Regular advancement encourages students to achieve more.
Principles and Goals of Judo
Judo, which is translated as the "gentle way", teaches the principle of flexibility in the application of technique. This is the flexible or efficient use of balance, leverage, and movement in the performance of Judo throws and other skills. Skill, technique and timing, rather than the use of brute strength, are the essential ingredients for success in Judo. For example, in Judo classes you may learn how to give way, rather than use force, to overcome a stronger opponent.
The principles of Judo, such as "Maximum Efficiency" and "Mutual Welfare and Benefit", can also be used in our dealings with others in life. The ultimate goal in Judo is to develop oneself to the maximum extent possible, always striving for perfection, so that you can contribute something of value to the world.

Frist Question for me

Is Aikido better than karate/judo/any other martial art?
Though there are many paths
At the foot of the mountain
All those who reach the top
See the same moon.
This is an extremely controversial question and has generated much heated debate in forums such as the rec.martial-arts newsgroup.

The answer to this question is very subjective - students of any particular martial art tend to favor that one over any other (otherwise they would probably be studying the other martial art).

There are many different but equally valid reasons for studying any martial art, such as for self defense, for spiritual growth or enlightenment, for general physical health, for self-confidence and more. Different martial arts, and even different styles within a particular martial art, emphasize different aspects.

Hence 'better' really depends on what it is you want out of a martial art. Even given this distinction, it is still a very subjective question so perhaps a better one would be 'Is Aikido better than any other martial art *for me*?'

This can only be answered by the individual asking the question. The rest of this FAQ may help you in some way towards finding that answer.

An alternative way to answer this question is to simply say, 'No, Aikido is not 'better' or 'worse' than any other martial art. It is simply different.'

Dojo Etiquette
Proper observance of etiquette is as much a part of your training as is learning techniques. Please take the following guidelines seriously.
1.When entering or leaving the dojo, it is proper to bow in the direction of O Sensei's picture, the kamiza, or the front of the dojo. What conversation there is should be
restricted to one topic -- Aikido.

10.Carry out the directives of the instructor PROMPTLY. Do not keep the rest of the class waiting for you!

11.Do not engage in rough-housing or needless contests of strength during class.

12.Keep your training uniform clean, in good shape, and free of offensive odors.

13.Please pay your membership dues promptly. On a purely physical level it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.
Upon closer examination, practitioners will find from Aikido what they are looking for, whether it is applicable self-defense technique, spiritual enlightenment, physical health or peace of mind. O Sensei emphasized the moral and spiritual aspects of this art, placing great weight on the development of harmony and peace. "The Way of Harmony of the Spirit" is one way that "Aikido" may be translated into English. This is still true of Aikido today, although different styles emphasize the more spiritual aspects to greater or lesser degrees. Although the idea of a martial discipline striving for peace and harmony may seem paradoxical, it is the most basic tenet of the art.
We could attempt to pigeonhole Aikido into a synopsis of X number of words, but that would not do it justice, so we leave the practitioner of Aikido to find out what Aikido is for themselves without any preconceived notions.

Failure of the Attempt
The Founder devoted himself to his previous life of study and concentrated on learning more deeply the secret of budo. The mountains of Ayabe offered an excellent gymnasium for study and practice. The Founder selected a suitable place, hung seven or eight sponge balls in a circle under the trees and with a nine foot practice spear, beautifully trusted at them in turn. His various skillful movements were engraved on the memories of the students at his side.
At the time of the Founder's return from China , Ayabe was still a lonely country town. Foxes and badgers were seen around his isolated home. Because the facilities of the town were inadequate, the habitants were often asked to donate their labor. As he worked among the laborers the Founder showed his gifted power. Once he pulled out a pine tree which was four or five sun in diameter (about 15 cm or 5.5 in) and relocated a big stone which more than ten laborers could not move. He would often astonish people in this way. He said, "I taught myself that and extraordinary spiritual power of the soul lies within the human body."
Reaching a New Stage
As his study progressed he developed a type of sixth sense with which he could feel the intended movements of his opponent. When he was traveling in Mongolia he was held up at the point of a Mauser pistol. He became aware of the opponent's intention to shoot because of a small "spiritual bullet" which went through him before the opponent actually pulled the trigger. Then with rapid movement he stepped to the opponent's side a split-second before the gun fired, threw him down and gained possession of the weapon. This is a well-known episode among people who are interested in Aikido.
In spring of 1925 a navy officer, a teacher of kendo, visited the Founder and asked to become his student. Then during a conversation, they happened to disagree over a trifle matter. Tempers rose. They agreed to have a match. The officer dashed forward to strike him, swinging his wooden sword. The Founder dodged his sword very easily each time. The officer finally sat down exhausted without having once touched him. The Founder says he felt the opponent's movements before they were actually executed in the same way as during his time in Mongolia . Resting after this match, the Founder went out into the near-by garden in which there was a persimmon tree. As he was wiping off the perspiration from his face, he was greatly overcome with a feeling which he had never experienced previously. He could neither walk nor sit. He was just rooted to the ground in great astonishment.
The Founder recalls his experience: I set my mind on budo when I was about 15 and visited teachers of swordmanship and jujitsu in various provinces. I mastered the secrets of the old traditions, each within a few months. But there was no one to instruct me in the essence of budo; the only thing that could satisfy my mind. So I knocked on the gates of various religions but I couldn't get any concrete answers. Then in the spring of 1925, if I remember correctly, when I was talking a walk in the garden by myself, I felt that the universe suddenly quaked, and that golden spirit sprang up from the ground, veiled my body, and changed my body into a golden one. At the same time my mind and body became light. I was able to understand the whispering of the birds, and was clearly aware of the mind of God, the Creator of his universe. At that moment I was enlightened: the source of budo is God's love - the spirit of loving protection for all beings. Endless tears of joy streamed down my cheeks. Since that time I have grown to feel that the whole earth is my house and the sun, the moon and the stars are all my own things. I had become free from all desire, not only for position, fame and property, but also to be strong. I understood, "Budo is not felling the opponent by our force; nor is it a tool to lead the world into destructions with arms. True budo is to accept the spirit of the universe, keep the peace of the world, correctly produce, protect and cultivate all beings in Nature." I understood, "The training of budo is to take God's love, which correctly produces, protects, and cultivates all things in Nature, and assimilate and utilize it in our own mind and body.
This revelation may have been only a momentary event, but it was the first such experience that he had ever had. It revolutionized the Founder's life and gave birth of Aikido.
From Aiki-Jujutsu to Aikido
Tracing the Founder's eighty-six years of study, we find that he was deeply interested in budo when he was young. He had gifted ability. Then came his pilgrimage throughout the world of jujutsu beginning in the middle of the Meiji era (1868-1912), during which he also devoted himself to the sword and other weapons, and the study of religions. Then, at last, the truth burst upon him.
The budo which he attained through his experience he later named Aikido.
When we look back to the old records and scrolls, in a few cases, we come across words like "a technique of aiki" or "aiki throw". But their explanations are abstract. "Don't be aiki-ed by the opponent." That is, don't drawn into the opponent's 'spirit harmony.' It is quite doubtful that a deeper meaning of the word was understood.
It was the Founder who clarified the superior way of Aikido as a separate entity in the society of budo- a society whose the members tended merely to emphasize techniques and strength. He asserted: "It is the way of budo to make the heart of the universe our own and perform our mission of loving and protecting all beings with a grand spirit. The techniques of budo are only a means to reach that end." The Founder, having thoroughly studied budo and acquired its essence through his severe training, first set up above all a goal for spiritual guidance and then fused the techniques of Aiki into the "stream of spirit, spirit power, or soul power. He gave life to the highly technical and spiritual side of Japanese budo within the society of man.
The Founder was the first who ever indicated clearly the world of Aiki and revealed its aim. From jujutsu to do (techniques to the Way)- this is the way to evolve endlessly toward to goal set up by the Master.

Caretaker of Settlers
Sokaku Takeda, a master of the Daito Ryu of Jujitsu, was in Hokkaido . At this time the Founder's land development work had made much progress and he had a great desire to study with Takeda.
At the age of 32 he met Master Takeda at the Hotel Hisata in Engaru in 1915 and was told, "You have potential and exceptional ability. So I will teach you." He became a student.
Daito Ryu Jujutsu has a long history, traditionally claiming to have been started by Prince Sadazumi, the sixth prince of Emperor Seiwa of the ninth century, and has been developed and preserved up to the present. Its theory is deep and the number of its techniques is great. Master Sokaku was quite an expert even though he was short; the Founder had great respect for him. Thus after they met he had an unexpected one-month stay at Hotel Hisata to study with Takeda. Later, in 1916, the Founder invited Takeda to his home, received instruction, and took care of him, including cook for him and bathing him. The Founder eventually built a new house for his teacher. Takeda was a man of violent spirit and very severe with students who were studying under him. This made no difference to the Founder. He forgot his food and sleep, and concentrated all his energy into their study. This fact has a deep relationship with present-day Aikido.
The Founder's study of the Daito Ryu started in 1915. In 1916 he got the precious certificate magnifying his having mastered all his studies. Over that period it was less than one hundred days that he actually studied with Takeda personally. The rest of time he studied and trained by himself.
For the budo he studied at that time he had to pay the teacher three hundred to five hundred yen for each technique (one yen then being equal to about half a dollar). In addition to that, the Founder had to work hard cutting wood and carrying water for his teacher before receiving the lesson. Thus he spent almost all the capital that he had received from his parents.
Serious Illness of His Father
Late in the spring of 1919 the Founder received a telegram telling him that his father was in serious condition. The Founder gave all his property to his teacher Takeda and left Hokkaido .
In Hokkaido , under the guidance of the Founder, the development of land had progressed well. The village was founded, a school had been constructed, and he had gained social prestige and property. But things such as these did not concern him. Only his painfully pleasant and fruitful studies were on his mind. Thus the young Founder returned from the north in the same condition he had gone: with no possessions, save a vigorous spirit.
Study at Ayabe
As he rode the train home he happened to hear of the Rev.Wanisaburo Dedushi the leader of the Omotokyo, a new religion. The Founder, desiring to do anything to heal his father, decided at once to change course for Ayabe, Kyoto Prefecture, where the Omotokyo Headquarters were located, and ask for prayers for the recovery of his father.
Ever since he was child, the Founder had naturally had and extraordinary interest in the study of spiritual thought and was raised with deep understanding by his parents. When he was seven years old, he studied under Priest Mitsujo Fujimoto of Jizoji Temple , of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism, and at the age of ten he had studied Zen Buddhism at Homanji Temple in Akitsu Village . Growing older, the Founder's seeking for spiritual food became stronger. He would visit wherever he could and ask for instructions.
The desire for his father's recovery was his main reason for visiting the Rev.Deguchi. However, after having listened to the priest he was struck by his profound insight.
When he arrived at his home in Tanabe, to his sorrow, he learned his father had passed away. Confronted with the death of the person whom he loved most in the world the Founder swore before the grave to break out of his mental deadlock, develop further, and reach for the secret of budo.
After that, the daily life of the Founder changed greatly. At times he stood on the top of a rock in a white robe and made pious prayer; or he would kneel somewhere on the top of a mountain, reciting Shinto prayers continuously. His old friends in his village were amazed at this change and worried that he had become mad. Later in 1919 he was attracted with the memory of Deguchi whom he had previously encountered, and moved to Ayabe with his entire family. He sought a light to brighten his heart. A house at the foot of the main shrine mountain in Ayabe became his home. There he taught jujitsu and studied actively under Reverend Deguchi until 1926

aikido

The First Gleam of Budo in a Child's mind
Founder Morihei Ueshiba was born in Tanabe, Kii Province (now known as Wakayama Prefecture ), a south-central peninsula of the Japanese main island, in November, 1883.
Until he was 14 or 15 years old, the Founder looked quite weak with his short, thin body, but he was strong and his behavior was quite different from others. He had already had a general interest in budo since he was around ten.
When he was just twelve, his father, Yoroku , a member of the local council, was the main caretaker of the village. The so-called Toughs of the town, the hoods of his father's political opponents, would come to his house to negotiate. Sometimes they would rough up his father quite severely, The Founder said that seeing this happen so frequently seared a deep sentiment into his mind. He swore to become strong no matter what it would take, and throw out his father's attackers.
Young Days as a Soldier
In 1901 when he was 18, the Founder took the first stops in the direction of achieving his driving ambition. He had come to Tokyo because he wanted to be a great merchant. He spent busy days working on a wholesale street, and studied jujutsu of the Kito Ryu at night. Sometimes he went to hear political speeches, as well. However, within a few months he developed heart beriberi and had to return home.
On this occasion, he made up his mind to build a strong body and after recovering began walking two and a half miles every day. This continued for ten days. Then twenty. Eventually he began running. He slowly gained physical strength and became capable of lifting two straw bales of rice, while previously he had not been able to lift even one. By the time he was about twenty he began to look quite different. Although he was still short his body was much stronger than ordinary people's. But the Founder was not satisfied only to be strong. He went to Sakai to study Yagyu-Ryu jujitsu. During this time he was involved in fishery and boundary problems of his village, and helped in solving them. Through this work he became well known locally. It was also about this time that he became involved in so many activities that more than once he was a headache for his father.
He was only 157 cm tall (5'2"), but he had a tank-like structure and weighed more than 81 kilogram (180 lbs). He played seconded to no one in this troop when it came to heavy gymnastics, running and carrying.
As Japan was at war, training was twice as hard as usual. Many soldiers dropped out. The Founder used to march at the head of the troops carrying two or three persons' heavy equipment. He was considered a valuable man in the battle of Manchuria and prevented a crisis among his troops more than a few times. Hence when he was discharged from military service he was requested by his officer-in-charge to volunteer for regular service and enter the military academy. He received several visits from his company commander, battalion commander, and regimental commander, all trying to persuade him to rein list.
Although he refused to enter the academy, he did not want to return to an ordinary life. Therefore the vigorous and spirited young man became a community leader in his village of Tanabe and managed the activities of his district. Kiyoichi Takagi, then just a third grade holder in judo, visited the Founder's home town. The Founder put together a group at the Young Men's Club of the town and had Takagi teach. Takagi later became a judo 9 th dan holder. The Founder himself studied judo with great diligence.
But then, perhaps because the fatigue resulting from his military life, the Founder had to stay in bed for about half a year. He suffered from severe headaches and some strange disease. His parents were very worried. Finally, however, he completely recovered. In the spring of 1910, he applied to become a settler in Hokkaido , the northern frontier of Japan at that time. He greatly anticipated the change of air and the opportunity to work in and undeveloped land.
The Founder went to Hokkaido in March of 1911 as leader of a group of pioneers from his area and started developing the land centering around Shirataki, Mombetsu Country, of Kitami Province, Having regain his health and renewed his spirit, and being in his vigorous thirties, he devoted himself to performing his duties. His physical condition improved greatly. He became a horseback rider and would go back and forth in the mountains and fields on business, occasionally braving storms. In this way his heavy training also included developing a resistance to severe cold. Being adventurous in this way, he was elected a member of the council of Kamiyubetsu Village , Shirataki in 1911. He helped and encouraged Mayor Urataro Kaneshige on behalf of the settlers, and was in contact with the Governor's Office of Hokkaido. He organized an association for the realization of the Sekihoku line, aiming to lay a railroad into the district, and was recommended to preside over the association. His sincere efforts won public approval, and in 1912 the inhabitants of Shirataki (an area about 25 squaremiles) gave him a full vote of confidence for his activities and respectfully called him the "King of Shirataki".
